What is an antedecent noun?

An antecedent noun is a noun that a pronoun replaces.

Example: When George got to 19th Street, he got off the train. ("George" is the antecedent of the pronoun "he.")

Note: An antecedent can also be a pronoun.

Example: You and I can do this if we work together.
