What has worked best with my little girl is to make science fun. I do this by taking any question she gets in homework and turning it into a game where I will perform a demonstration of the scientific principle using stuff that I can find at home such as refrigerator magnets, sugar and water to explain how solids dissolve into liquids, a string tied around her little teddy bear to demonstrate centrifugal force, rubbing my hands to demonstrate friction and on and on... just get creative. And there is nothing that will get a child to pay attention like slapstick humor. So hitting yourself in the face while spinning the teddy bear on the string or building a plastic cup pyramid and after the explanation "accidentally" nocking it all down while making an idiot face are great ways to keep kids focused on you. They will never forget a lesson that includes a lot of humor and you can get a room full of children to pay attention to you. Just remember that the main goal is to teach them, not just entertain them, so keep the jokes short and get right back to the lesson but always keep it light hearted and fun. This method is effective with any subject as children are audio-visual learners rather than readers. I have a life time of information that I can write on this issue, but I hope this small article will help.
