Do police officers get ear damage for shooting a gun without protection?

It is quite likely that a certain amount of hearing loss occurs in the presence of nearby loud explosions. However they are never constantly around the sound of close gunfire. When at the gun range and firing for practice and qualification, they are required to wear sound deadening ear devices of one type or another.
