What is the purpose of a Sea Chest in a boat. Occasionally seen in the engine room of a small yacht?

The purpose of a sea chest is to minimize the number of thru-hull penetrations required for equipment that requires sea water for cooling. All the hoses that might feed various equipment take their suction from this sea chest. The logic is that one larger penetration in one location is better than several located throughout the hull.
