What is the function of an Opposition?

Inside the legislature,the opposition party acts as a restraining force.It asks questions, moves adjourment motions,votes of no-confidence etc.It raises issues,which may embarass the government and criticizes the government for its failure and lapses.It acts as a government in reverse ready to step in when the ruling government alters or fails.
