Tornadoes are not particularly common in Pennsylvania. The state averages about 17 per year which is not very much, especially since most of them are weak. The worst tornado event to affect the state was on May 31, 1985 when 21 tornadoes, including the state's only recorded F5, tore through northern Pennsylvania claiming 65 lives.
