Stillman's Clefting is a drastic 'v' shaped fissure extending from the margin of the gingiva on the affected tooth, down to the root area of the same tooth. It is most commonly caused by tooth trauma (faulty/poorly placed orthodontic devices), but it can also be cause by improper brushing of the teeth (too much pressure over prolonged time), abnormal tooth anatomy, or even by the thinning of deep gingival pockets which surround the tooth, which then break through exposing the root of the tooth in a 'V' shaped fashion (brushing too hard can also contribute to this). In terms of 'preventing' the clefting, the best you can do is practice proper toothbrushing (ask your hygienist how to properly brush), wear orthodontic devices as directed (like bite planes at night)-report any discomfort to your dentist. Gently brushing and flossing the teeth EVERYDAY to remove plaque will prevent gingival pockets from forming. also, visiting your Dentist and Dental Hygienist regularly for check ups and cleaning. Let them know of any areas of your mouth which are bothering you (especially any areas on the gingiva). Basically, take good care of your teeth and report any discomfort and you should be fine.
