What happens to airbenders do they die out completely or are some in hiding?

Airbenders, particularly following the events of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," faced significant challenges due to the near-extermination of their culture by the Fire Nation. While many airbenders were killed, it's suggested that some may have survived in hiding or been reborn in new avatars. In "The Legend of Korra," we see new airbenders emerging, indicating that the potential for airbending still exists, albeit in a limited form. Thus, while the population was drastically reduced, they did not die out completely.
