Ultraviolet (UV) sanitizers are effective at killing microorganisms exposed directly to UV light; however, ice can block UV radiation from penetrating deeply enough to reach organisms trapped within. As a result, while the surface of the ice may be sanitized, any organisms inside may remain unaffected. For effective sanitization of organisms in ice, other methods such as heat or chemical treatments would be necessary.
