Historically, "laparotomy" referred to a type of celiotomy done through a flank approach. But the terms became interchangeable through common usage over a hundred years ago. In my experience, most surgeons use "laparotomy" to refer to all peritoneal approaches and I rarely hear the term "celiotomy" used.
