Why did John Glenn go into space for the second time?

In October 1998, Senator Glenn

returned to space at the age of 77 as a payload specialist aboard

the space shuttle Discovery, making him the oldest person to fly in

space. His participation, at the age of 77, would allow scientists

to study the effects of space travel on the elderly.
