What did the US do to overcome the threat of German U-boats?

People will always mention the "convoy system" of course; but that was strictly a defensive measure...not a killing measure.

What killed subs was airplanes. If a sub could been seen, it could be killed. And subs almost always had to run upon the surface in order to breath.
