Abraham Lincoln ran for public office several times before his presidency. He lost his first election for the Illinois State Legislature in 1832 but won the following year. He also lost races for the U.S. Senate in 1855 and 1858 before ultimately being elected as the 16th President of the United States in 1860. In total, he experienced three significant electoral defeats.
