What is the difference between a catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter?

A catalytic converter is designed to reduce harmful emissions from gasoline engines by facilitating chemical reactions that convert pollutants like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides into less harmful substances. In contrast, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) is specifically used in diesel engines to capture and store soot and particulate matter produced during combustion, preventing them from being released into the atmosphere. While both components aim to reduce emissions, the catalytic converter focuses on chemical conversion, whereas the DPF focuses on physical filtration of particulates.
