The transmission range sensor it the sensor for the automatic transmission to find all the shift points in the shifting of all gears.

if this goes bad it could cause a lot of shifting problems and even braking problems i have heard of people losing control of the vehicle while driving on the free way. The free way is were you will feel most of the symptoms for the range sensor.

i would get this fixed Asap!

1. do it your self the sensor cost about $20 to $70 depending on what vehicle.

and it located on the top of your transmission by the shifter. and has 2 bolts and needs to be aligned correctly.

2. call the dealer for help on do it your self or pay them to fix it about $200 - $600 depends on vehicle . this is a average amount for dealer or shops .

(Note) the shops will be cheaper than a dealer .

(Notes) for do it your self:

Get a manual for your car or call dealer for guides and diagrams.

get a Haynes Repair Manual

Here is a Example Instructions for a Hyundai Repair Transmission Range Sensor Switch.

Unfortunately, I cannot post a picture here. But, if you'd like to see pictures and the repair

procedure, you can register for a free account at www.hmaservice.com (requires internet

Explorer).

To replace the switch, you'll need a ratchet, long extension, and 10mm and 14mm sockets. If

you need to remove the battery tray-- I cannot recall if it's in the way-- you'll also need a 12mm

socket.

1. Apply the parking brake.

2. Place the vehicle in neutral and turn the ignition switch to the accessory position.

3. Unplug the range switch.

4. Remove the 14mm nut and lock washer holding the shifter arm in place on the switch.

5. Remove the shifter arm from the selector shaft.

6. Remove the 10mm bolts holding the range switch in place.

7. Remove the range switch and install the new switch.

8. Install the 10mm bolts finger tight and then back them off 1/2 turn.

9. Install the lever onto the selector shaft.

10. Install the lock washer and securely tighten the 14mm nut.

11. Make sure the shift lever inside the car is still in the neutral position.

12. Align the hole in the range switch with the hole in the shift lever.

13. Securely tighten the two 12mm bolts.

14. Plug in the range switch.

And here are better instructions for another vehicle.
