- Electrical engineers design computers, cellphones, televisions, digital cameras, synthesizers, amplifiers, power generation and distribution systems, antennas, WiFi routers, satellites and industrial control systems.
- Mechanical engineers design internal combustion engines, gas turbines, steam turbines, pumps, compressors, vehicle frames, ships, aircraft, appliances and industrial machinery as well as numerous smaller objects and devices.
- Civil engineers design roads, bridges, dams, canals, buildings, traffic control systems, water systems, water treatment facilities and railways, among other things.
- Architectural engineers design buildings and the water, lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems that go into them.
- Textile engineers design things made from fibers, including fabrics used for clothing, roofing (from tents to stadiums), packaging and decoration, as well as cord and rope.
There are a number of applications where the engineering disciplines overlap and a large project may require a number of engineers from different specialties.
