Matilda and Lavender became friends when Lavender stood up for Matilda against the Trunchbull by pretending to put a newt in the Trunchbull's water jug. Matilda admired Lavender's bravery in standing up to the Trunchbull and the two bonded over their shared dislike of the cruel headmistress.
