How do you deal with a homophobic classmate?

In general, several studies have shown that the more homophobic a person is, the more likely they are to have same-sex sexual attraction themselves (there was a whole documentary on HBO about that). So, first off, realize that the homophobe may have more in common with you than you think.

Otherwise, be sure to stand up for yourself without resorting to violence, and if EVER you are afraid of physical violence from him or anyone, get help from an adult you trust. Maybe try to think up some quick one-liners that will help deflect attention from you back onto him. If there is a GSA at your school, or a gay/lesbian center in your town, consult with people there for ideas and help, too.

If the taunting resembles bullying and persists, you should draw this to the attention of your teacher(s) or principal if not your parents so that steps can be taken to correct the bully's behavior. Show the homophobe with respect
