Why did the USSR adopt atheism as an official state policy?

To eliminate one potential source of conflict and opposition.

because the communists refused to let the church exercise any power over its civilians and workers.

Christianity also conflicted with communist ideology.

Communists ideology was about science/progress and rationality, working hard and trying to improve and become a stronger version of oneself while Christianity opposed all those things.
