The Celts in France and Britain; Ancient Thrace in what is now Romania; ancient Malta; before the Romans took control of Italy there was an important civilization called the Etruscan; the Minoan civilization from Crete who traded with the ancient Egyptians

These are the ones I can recall from memory there were more. Try these names on the internet for more detailed information.

When Rome was at the height of her power her main European opponent were the German tribes. The Romans considered them "barbarians" but modern archaeological evidence indicate that they were quite a sophisticated people.
