it can be traced back thru french to troubadour provencal to classical latin to ancient greek where its original form apotheke meant storehouse or a place where things are put away

& this came from 2 smaller notions meaning put & away

you can see the same idea as bodega & also apothecary

boutiques didnt become fashion shops til 1953 or shops at all til 1767

but first the storehouse keeper had to become a shopkeeper or a storekeeper as we say

which happened in 1366
