Chief Bromden ends up in the asylum due to his struggles with mental health, stemming from trauma and his experiences with oppressive societal structures. He becomes overwhelmed by feelings of powerlessness, particularly in relation to the dehumanizing practices he observes in the institution, which he refers to as the "Combine." His schizophrenia leads him to withdraw into silence and delusions, making it difficult for him to cope with reality. Ultimately, he seeks refuge in the asylum, where he feels he can escape the harshness of the outside world.
