What caused the death of Secretariat?

There are conflicting stories for the cause of Secretariat's laminitis. Some say obesity, others Cushings, and still others theorize the constant pounding of racing on his hooves may have been the cause. Access to his necropsy report may clear things up but until then we can only speculatel.
