According to the Online Etymology dictionary, the Word maze originates in the 1300s and means 'delusion, bewilderment'. It is possibly from Old English and the same root as 'amazed'. It might also be related to the Norwegian dialect Word 'mas' which means 'exhausting labour'. Use of the Word 'maze' to mean 'labyrinth' is first recorded in the late fourteenth century.
