Who invented the beam as a piece of apparatus for gymnastics and when?

Friedrich Ludwig Jahn invented the balance beam as well as the parallel bars, the vault and the horizontal bar. I am not entirely sure what year it was invented, but 1952 was the first year women won medals for competing on the event during the Olympics.
