Why did Jesus breathe on his apostles?

In John's Gospel, Jesus breathed on the disciples on the evening of the day of his resurrection, giving them the Holy Spirit.

The synoptic gospels do not have this episode, and Acts of the Apostles has the disciples receive the Holy Spirit as tongues of fire on the Day of the Pentecost.
