Before San Juan Capistrano was officially founded in 1776, Spanish explorers such as Gaspar de Portolá and Junípero Serra played significant roles in its exploration and eventual establishment. Portolá led an expedition in 1769 that traveled through California, while Serra, a Franciscan missionary, was instrumental in the establishment of missions along the coast. The area was initially explored by these expeditions as part of Spain's efforts to expand its territory and spread Christianity among Indigenous populations.
