The most important thing to consider when determining what's appropriate is your relationship with the deceased. Wreaths, bouquets and sprays may be sent from anybody to any location, however what is more important is the type of flower you select. An elaborate bouquet of long stemmed red roses is most likely not appropriate if you were an acquaintance who wasn't very close to the deceased, since this typically represents romantic love and undying affection.
Tributes and arrangements in the form of a shape, such as a cross or heart, are best sent by family members or those of the same religious/cultural background. Such arrangements should be sent to the location of the service or memorial, rather than the home of the bereaved. For the home of the bereaved, potted plants and fresh fruit baskets are more appropriate.
Casket adornments, such as half or full coverings and pillow decorations, should not be sent by anybody who is not of the immediate family.
