Stegosaurus's head was low to the ground, an adaptation for reaching the plants it ate. On its back there were 17 large, bony, triangular plates. Although these were an important adaptation, their use is unknown. They may have been used for armor, although they would have been minimally effective since they didn't cover the animal's sides. They could have been used to help cool the Stegosaurus, or they may have been used for display. On its tail, Stegosaurus had four spikes, called thagomizers, each of which was two feet long. The thagomizers were a powerful weapon for defense against predators.
