At birth, most babies have a fine layer of hair called lanugo, which typically covers their body and can vary in thickness and amount. Some babies may have a full head of hair, while others may have very little or none at all. On average, a newborn might have about 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles, but the actual amount of visible hair can differ widely. Lanugo usually sheds within the first few weeks of life.
