Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love, beauty and fertility. She became known in Rome as Venus. She was born of the sea. Her father married her to Hephaestus.

She was said to have been the daughter of Zeus although there are many stories disproving that theory. She was unhappily married to Hephaestus but had affairs with many other gods including Ares, Adonis, etc. She was very sneaky with her affairs, but many times one of her lovers became jealous of another and a lot ended badly. She flaunted herself to get what she wanted, and was the most beautiful of all the gods and goddesses and her Roman name is Venus. The song you hear in the Venus commercials is actually a song written about her.
