How did Jem's mother die in to kill a mockingbird?

It says at the beginning of the book that Scout and Jem's mom died when Scout was 2 so she doesn't remember her well. It also says that Jem, who is 4 years older than Scout, seems to have memories of her that make him unhappy at times.
