Where did the term bat crazy come from?

"Bat Crazy" comes from "Bat S#&* Crazy." I haven't found a recorded instance of the Word that includes its derivation. Anecdotally (unsupported claims of derivation), the term is said to come from an assumption that bats fly in apparently random patterns with sudden acute turns because they're crazy. Bats do not run into each other--which I find miraculous given how closely they fly together when exiting a space en masse. I suspect that the term "Bat S#&* Crazy" may have origins closer to "mad as a hatter," which comes from the fact that hatters suffered neurological damage from being exposed to Mercury compounds used to make hats. Bat guano miners get histoplasmosis, but not neurological disorders. Even so, sometimes people make erroneous connections, so "bat s#&* crazy" may have come from some association between bat guano miners, chimney sweeps (exposed to bat poop) or some other population with a noticeable connection to bats and frequent neurological conditions.
