The Exxon Valdez left the shipping lanes at approximately 12:04 a.m. on March 24, 1989. The tanker was en route to Long Beach, California, but diverted off course in Prince William Sound, Alaska, leading to a catastrophic oil spill after running aground on Bligh Reef shortly thereafter. This incident became one of the most infamous environmental disasters in history.
