In "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs, Mr. White's final wish is for his son, Herbert, to return to the grave after he is killed by the wish for money. After experiencing the terror of the consequences of his previous wishes, Mr. White is desperate to undo the Horror and seeks to prevent Herbert from coming back as a potentially malevolent force. Ultimately, his last wish is made just as a knock is heard at the door, leaving the outcome ambiguous and chilling.
