What was St. Monica's life like?

Monica's life was very difficult. She was married to an abusive and unfaithful pagan husband, she shared the home with her mother-in-law who was also very abusive to her and she had a son, St. Augustine, who turned away from God and lived a very profligate life in his earlier years. Throughout all this Monica maintained her faith and prayed constantly for the conversion of her family members.
