When a married couple grow old and especially when one spouse has Alzheimer's it is extremely difficult for the caregiver. In fact, if you can keep your mother at home you will find that the task of looking after her will be 24/7 and often Alzheimer's patients can roam and have been known to leave the house at night when others are sleeping (some disappearing and not found.) You and your family should find an organization that deals with Alzheimer's patients and learn more about the disease and once you know how difficult it is to care for a loved one with this dreaded disease the family will have to decide to put your mother into a nursing home where she can get round the clock care. I had to do this with my own mother. It is difficult, but it is for their own safety because Alzheimer's continues to get worse and the person with it will gradually not recognize anyone in the family and may become fearful. Alzheimer's patients can also get physical by screaming for no reason (they feel someone is trying to hurt them); kicking; scratching or throwing objects. There are medications your family doctor can give your mother, but it only slows the process of Alzheimer's down and does not cure the disease.

You should speak with an attorney about being appointed your mother's legal guardian. You have no legal authority over her at this time and need some authority should she need medical care or treatment. Her mistreatment by her husband would be entered into the court records. Do not delay.
