The hierarchy of needs, proposed by Abraham Maslow, consists of five levels:
-
Physiological Needs: Basic requirements for human survival, such as food, water, and shelter.
-
Safety Needs: The need for security and protection from physical and emotional harm.
-
Love and Belongingness Needs: The desire for social relationships, love, and acceptance.
-
Esteem Needs: The need for self-esteem, recognition, and respect from others.
-
Self-Actualization: The pursuit of personal growth, fulfillment, and realizing one’s potential.
These levels must be fulfilled in order, with more basic needs needing to be met before individuals can focus on higher-level needs.
