The member of the Black Hand gang who threw the grenade at Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, was Nedeljko Cabrinovic. On June 28, 1914, during the archduke's visit to Sarajevo, Cabrinovic attempted to assassinate him by throwing a hand grenade at their motorcade, although it missed and injured other bystanders. Cabrinovic later attempted to commit suicide by ingesting a cyanide pill, but was apprehended by the police.
