- April 1st - Pope Leo XI becomes the 232nd pope.
- May 16th - Pope Paul V becomes the 233nd pope.
- September 27th - the Battle of Kircholm takes place. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth beat the Swedish.
- October (date unknown) - the first newspaper is published by Johann Carolus in Strasbourg.
- November 5th - The Gunpowder Plot - a plot to blow up the English Houses of Parliament - fails when Guy Fawkes is arrested upon the discovery of himself, and various barrels of gunpowder, by Sir Thomas Knyvet in a cellar beneath the parliament.
