The first cities were built in Mesopotamia, modern day Iraq, in around 5000 BC. Cities such as Babylon and Ur were among the largest permanent settlements in the ancient world. Older groups of buildings have been found in Europe, Egypt and Japan, but none as large as those in the Middle East. One such city, Damascus, has survived to become the longest-inhabited city in the world and the capitol of Syria. It was mentioned in Egyptian tablets from the 15th century BC as a village (the Egyptians tended to have small towns rather than large cities), is mentioned in the Old Testament and continues to be lived in today.
Some archaeologists claim to have found older cities in Peru, India and other places, but there is no real evidence to back up these claims. Answer Genesis 4:17 states that Cain built a city, and called the name of the city after his son, Enoch. This answer does not tell us where the first city was built, does it? We must remember that at the time of Adam and his family all land was in one place, in the northern part of the world. In chapter 10 it tells us that the earth was divided into its various nations or countries. So where did Cain build his city? It is suggested that his city was in the land which is now North America. Do not poo par this suggestion, remember the land was all in one place for a many many years and North America did not exist, only The Earth existed.
