Why are free manga websites being shut down?

Many free manga sites have not been given permission by the copyright holders to reproduce or distribute the content that they host. This means that they are violating copyright. Some would consider this tantamount to theft so they are being shut down. The reason why they persist is that some manga have not been officially translated or are unavailable in the countries who the websites cater to. Also, free stuff will never go out of style.
