Air pressure in the chest cavity decreases during inhalation, allowing air to flow into the lungs. When we exhale, the pressure in the chest cavity increases as the diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax, pushing air out of the lungs. Thus, air moves in when the pressure is lower and moves out when the pressure is higher.
