Why did highwaymen dress in expensive clothes?

People dress in expensive clothes because they have the money to buy them and want to wear them. They want to wear them to let people know they can afford them or, perhaps, because they want to dress like their peers or give the impression that they belong to certain group who wear that kind of clothes. Some people develop an intense interest in clothes and want to look a certain way which happens to be expensive.
