What was a common name the people of 1914 called World War 1?

The Great War. "Great" in the sense of huge, massive, not in the sense of something wonderful. It did not become WWI until there was a WWII a generation later. In between, certainly everyone hoped there would never be anything like it again, and it continued to be called the Great War.
