Why was what happened at fort Sumter so important?

The attack on the US Army garrison caused Lincoln to appeal for volunteer-troops. This was equivalent to the declaration of war that he couldn't issue because he did not recognise the Confederacy as a sovereign nation.

It meant the war was on.
