What do compounds exist of?

Compounds are substances formed when two or more elements chemically bond together in fixed proportions. They consist of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds, such as ionic or covalent bonds. The properties of a compound differ significantly from those of its individual constituent elements. Examples of compounds include water (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and sodium chloride (NaCl).
