The 207 year-long period of relative political
stability and prosperity in the Roman Empire was called Pax Romana,
or Roman Peace. It is also sometimes referred to as Pax Augusta, as
this period started under the first Roman emperor, Augustus. It
followed the period of civil wars which tore Rome apart, brought
down the Roman Republic and led to its replacement by the absolute
rule by emperors which was started by Augustus.
