Although modern writers have created numerous subdivisions of non-believers, generally speaking:
- A person who does not believe in gods is an atheist.
- A person who believes in gods is a theist.
- A person who claims neither a belief nor disbelief in gods is an agnostic. The agnostic believes nothing can be known of anything beyond the material world.
