it has no atmosphere to retain the heat

It also takes about a month for the moon to orbit the earth... thus a "lunar Day" is a month long.

So the side facing the sun gets very hot, with no atmospheric protection, and a very long day.

The side facing away from the sun gets very cold with no atmospheric insulation and a very long night.
